DEPARTMENT RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS
Research Area 1
Pharmaceutics division of NIPER-G focuses on diversified areas of research aiming to provide
the pharmaceutical products not only on the basis of whole populations but also at the level
of individual patient needs. Ideally the pharmaceutical formulations consists of single drug and
loading another drug into same formulations poses a great challenge in terms of drug-drug
interaction. Providing the multiple drug loading possibility within a single formulation is one of
the current area of interest. The formulations with multiple drug loading could be developed in
two different ways depending on the physical natures of drug delivery systems, viz., liquid-
retentive and solid at room temperature condition. The bifurcation of liquid-retentive structure
into two or three halves allows the loading of dual or triple drug into the formulation. However,
the bifurcated structures can only be seen in an virtual mode via confocal laser scanning
microscope (Fig. 1). On the other hand, the compartmental-type solid formulation such as
tablet should allow the incorporation of two drugs and the visualization by naked eye is
extremely possible (Fig. 2).

Conclusions The concept of dual drug-loadings into the liquid-retentive nanocarriers and
solid-structured tablets are possible.
