Research Area 3

Screening small molecules, peptides and natural products
Biotechnology is also involved for screening small molecules, peptides and natural
products in cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Musa balbisiana (MB) fruit
pulp powder was tested in a rat model of isoproterenol induced cardiac hypertrophy
by subcutaneous administration of isoproterenol for 14 days through ALZET® mini
pump. An ultra-high-pressure liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (UPLC-
MS/MS) analytical method was used to characterize the chemical composition of M.
balbisiana (MB) fruit pulp powder. Oral administration of MB significantly decreased

heart weight/tail length ANP, BNP, β-MHC and collagen-1 gene expression. Likewise,
MB further reduced inflammation and increased antioxidative enzyme activity in
hypertrophy heart. The study strongly suggested that supplementation of dried M.
balbisiana fruit pulp can be useful for the prevention of cardiac hypertrophy and
inflammation. We are further characterize the powder and looking its effect on non-
               alcoholic fatty liver disease.
