Projects going on @ NIPER-Guwahati

Currently three projects are going on at NIPER-Guwahati

  • DST WOS-A Project (Principal investigator - Dr. Swapnil Sinha, Mentor - Dr. Utpal Mohan)
    Drug-resistant bacteria are a growing challenge to world health, and new approaches to antibiotic development are needed. Riboswitches, which are regulatory elements of mRNA, are shown to be a potential new target for antibiotic drugs. We are highly interested in developing a riboswitch-based toolbox to target and study infectious diseases like tuberculosis. Riboswitches are structures that form in mRNA and regulate gene expression after binding to ligands. 5’ untranslated region (5’ UTR) of mRNA which refers to the region between the transcriptional and the translational start sites, in the presence of a specific ligand, folds in such a way that it up-regulates or down-regulates the gene expression and hence the name riboswitch that could be turned ON and OFF. We are using this strategy to identify lead molecules, which binds to the 5’ UTR of genes crucial for pathogenesis/survival of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and inhibit the expression of downstream gene thus abrogating the manifestations of tuberculosis.
  • DBT Twinning Project (NIPER-Guwahati and NIPER-Hyderabad) - (PI - Dr. Ranadeep Gogoi, Co PI - Dr. (Mrs) Mangala Lahkar)
    Neuropathic pain is a complex problem, differing in its aetiologies. The currently available pharmacotherapies exert variable and limited efficacy depending on the type of neuropathic pain state present and are associated with significant adverse-effect profiles. Neuropathic pain, according to NeuPSIG (Special Interest Group on Neuropathic Pain) definition, is the pain resulting from a lesion or disease affecting the somatosensory system]. It affects as much as 5% of the worldwide population with conditions like diabetic neuropathy, post herpetic neuralgia, neuropathy associated with stroke, multiple sclerosis, HIV infection, traumatic injury, alcoholism, cancer and chemotherapy. This project may provide an insight to design and develop futuristic treatment regimen for neuropathic pain. This study may help to identify the role of neuroinflammatory and oxidative-nitrosative stress related PARP overactivation in the pathophysiology of neuropathic pain. This may further enable to provide newer combination therapies that not only alleviate the neuropathic pain but it also attenuates the nerve damage and prevent further progression of neuropathic pain and neurodegenerative mechanism.

    This project is sponsored by the Department of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, for the establishment of an Institutional Biotechnology Hub, which can promote scientific growth aided by the facilities like advanced instrumentation and other resources.
